Slide 49: The inertial confinement concept uses high power lasers producing up to 100 trillion watts of power to heat the surface layer of a fuel pellet-an ablator. The outward streaming ablator material produces an inward directed force that compresses the D-T fuel in the pellet core to 20 times the density of lead. Essentially, the process throws the material together to make it fuse.
