Slide 23: To understand better, let's start at the beginning . . . An atom in one of the three common states of matter possesses a nucleus containing protons and neutrons. Orbiting around the nucleus are many electrons. The number of protons is the atomic number, while the number of protons and neutrons together essentially make up the atomic mass of an atom.
